Quantum Leap Productions is proud to be the production partner of the broadcast documentary film “Riders of the Purple Sage: The Making of a Western Opera”. Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Kristin Atwell, Quantum Leap followed the creative process as Arizona Opera adapted Zane Grey’s classic novel, “Riders of the Purple Sage” into a new American opera. We filmed inside rehearsal halls, studios, and stages in Arizona and New York City, and shot out on location in remote places that inspired Zane Grey when he was writing the novel that would become the headwaters of the Western genre.
From one-camera 4k interviews, and complex multi-camera and audio set ups for orchestra rehearsals and backstage access; to cinematic recreations on horseback with sticks, rail and drone; to a live switch of the world premiere in Phoenix Symphony Hall, Quantum Leap provided the pre-production, permitting, and planning to make each production day over several years come together to yield a complete story in the editing bay and on the screen.
Filmed on Location:
Arizona Opera Center, Desert Mountain Communities, Ed Mell Gallery, Mormon Lake Lodge, National Opera America Center, Navajo National Monument, The Navajo Nation, Phoenix Symphony Hall, Pipe Spring National Monument, Rim Country Museum & Zane Grey Cabin, Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.
